About Thomas Barow
Thomas Barow is a Professor in Education with specialization in special education at Örebro University. He received his doctorate in 2007 at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin with a thesis that addressed the situation of people categorized as “feeble-minded” in Sweden during the first half of the 20th century. Since 2008, Thomas has been working at the Swedish universities in Borås (2008-2013), Halmstad (2013-2015) and Gothenburg (2015-2022). During the same time, he was also active as interim professor of special education at the German universities of Siegen (2011), Erfurt (2017/18) and Cologne (2021/22).
Thomas started his position as a professor at Örebro University in October 2022. He is leading the research environment SpecEDL (Special Education, Development and Learning). His research concerns special education and inclusion with focus on pedagogical, didactical, social, and historical aspects from both national and international perspectives. For example, he did research on pedagogical assessment and special pedagogical categorizations. He is currently studying the cooperation of professionals in special schools for pupils with intellectual disability.
At Örebro University, Thomas teaches in the general teacher education program and in the special education program. He supervises and examines at bachelor's, master's, and PhD level.
