Arthur PJ Mol

Arthur PJ Mol is Rector Magnificus of Wageningen University and Professor of Environmental Policy.

Arthur Mol's research primarily concerns questions on how society can be ecologically modernised, that is, how production and consumption can become more sustainable. The central questions are how and to what extent environmental considerations become incorporated into organisations' activities, and what various governance arrangements can be developed to deal with complex and global environmental risks. He has set up and been the director of one of the world's leading research centres of environmental sociology, Environmental Policy Group (ENP) at Wageningen University, encompassing some 60 researchers and doctoral students.

Arthur Mol has a broad international perspective in his research and has advanced and strengthened the development of environmental sociology research around the world. He has worked extensively in Southeast Asia, East Africa, and Europe, and has been professor at Renmin University and Tsinghua University in China, as well as at the National University of Malaysia (UKM). He is the joint editor of the journal Environmental Politics and is a member of editorial boards of eight international journals and two book series. For a number of years, researchers at the environmental sociology section at Örebro University have collaborated with Arthur Mol and his research centre, which has led to research staff exchange and co-authoring of research publications. He has been most generous in sharing his competence, international perspectives and wide network, which has been of utmost importance for the development of the environmental sociology research in Örebro.
