New study highlights the importance of considering subtypes of partner violent perpetrators regarding recidivism in such violence

The study compared the recidivism rate between arrested and non-arrested partner violent men following a police report of intimate partner violence.

Overall, the results did not show any differences in recidivism between the arrested and non-arrested perpetrators. However, an interaction effect emerged when differentiating between generally violent and non-generally violent (‘partner only violent’) perpetrators. Among those perpetrators who were arrested, generally violent perpetrators were more than four times as likely as partner only violent perpetrators to recidivate in IPV. The results of the study indicate that arrest following a police report can have different effects on recidivism for different subtypes of partner men.
