Communicating acceptance and understanding of pain patients’ experiences does not take extra time

 A physiotherapist examines a patient's back.

A new study that was published in European Journal of Physiotherapy investigated physiotherapists validating and invalidating communication when seeing patients with low back pain problems.

Patient interviews were analyzed before and after physiotherapists received brief Cognitive Functional Therapy (CFT) training that included a session on validation skills. Results showed that validating responses increased and invalidating responses decreased from pre- to post training. Although the length of interviews was longer after the training than before, this was due to other factors than changes in validating and invalidating communication. This indicates that it does not take extra time to engage in communicating acceptance and understanding.
