Negotiating masculine ideals when upper-secondary boys discussed vegan school meals
In a recently published article in Food, Culture & Society, the ESERGO researchers Nicklas Lindgren and Sara Frödén analyzed how Swedish upper-secondary school boys negotiated a school’s decision to serve vegan school meals.
The study showed that masculinity-coded arguments related to sustainability, animal welfare, and health were often reinterpreted to legitimize continued meat consumption. In contrast to previous research, the boys did not express climate denialist opinions; instead, masculinity-coded body ideals linked to strength, muscle growth, and protein emerged as central obstacles to a transition toward plant-based diets.
