Abstract

Extending the material in one-dimension results in fibers with unique physical properties (e.g. mechanical, optical, etc.) that allow customized performance of their products. Textiles and clothing were among the first applications of fibrous structures, and these textiles represent a second skin for humans with a direct contact to most parts of the body. Hence, integrating smart materials into fibrous structures (such as clothing) allows monitoring and recording the body’s vital signs and physiological activities. In this presentation, we will introduce possibilities of using multiple smart materials in fibrous structures, and will present our development for fibrous membranes with chemosensing elements. On the other hand, we will show a few applications for Artificial Intelligent (AI) to control the quality of fibrous products. We will present the utilization of a deep learning system to extract features from textile images then detecting and classifying their defects. The multidisciplinary nature of Fibers Science and Engineering will be demonstrated in this presentation; especially with the ongoing innovations in that field.
