Abstract: The International Space Station (ISS) represents one of the most complex engineering systems ever assembled in space, with robotics playing a central role in its assembly, day-to-day operations and maintenance. This presentation provides an overview of the ISS and its robotic infrastructure, focusing on the Mobile Servicing System (MSS), which comprises Canadarm2 (the Space Station Remote Manipulator System, SSRMS), the Mobile Base System (MBS), and the Special Purpose Dextrous Manipulator (SPDM, or Dextre).
The talk will examine how robotic systems were used during the assembly of the ISS and discuss the operational concepts that enable the manipulation of large structures and payloads in orbit. Key topics include the SSRMS modes of operation, control architectures, coordinate-frame selection, and typical operational sequences employed by astronauts and ground controllers. Particular attention will be given to the effects of ISS attitude-control and reboost manoeuvres, as well as thruster firings from visiting vehicles, on SSRMS operations. The implications for both unloaded and payload-handling configurations of the manipulator will be discussed, together with the associated operational and control challenges.
The presentation aims to provide an introduction to the principles of space robotics while illustrating their application through real ISS operations and mission examples.”
