Recent advances in the modelling, analysis and simulation of human crowds or How do I escape from a crowded shopping mall?

Speaker

Professor Adrian Muntean from Karlstad University.

Summary

I will introduce the audience to a couple of  fundamental questions concerning the modelling, analysis, and numerical forecasting of the motion of pedestrian flows. The main modelling ingredients include measure-valued equations and their particle systems  approximation as well as a bit of multi-scale modelling.  After showing the audience how basic social behaviours can be modelled (like friendship, hate, etc.), the talk will focus on a two-dimensional lattice model describing how people move in dark (or in smoky regions). If time allows, I  will model also levels of trust and   cooperation thresholds, and then, I  will explore numerically to which extent these features can lead to improved evacuation fluxes (i.e. minimal residence times of particles inside the chosen crowded geometries).
