Our history in brief
Örebro University has its roots in the higher education that was established in Örebro in the 1960s. In 1977, Örebro University College was established through a merger of the Uppsala University branch in Örebro, the Preschool Teaching Seminary, the College of Physical Education and Sport Science, and the College of Social Sciences. Örebro University was founded in 1999.
1963 The first permanent higher education programme in Örebro is launched – a Master of Technology administered by the Royal Institute of Technology. Örebro Student Union is established.
1966 The College of Physical Education and Sport Science (GIH) is founded.
1967 Örebro becomes a university branch of Uppsala University. The College of Social Sciences in Örebro is founded.
1970 Construction of the first building (GIH) on what is today the main campus area.
1972 The first student apartments on Studentgatan next to the university are ready for moveāin.
1977 Örebro University College is founded through a merger of the Uppsala University branch, the Preschool Teaching Seminary, the College of Physical Education and Sport Science, and the College of Social Sciences.
1978 The Institute of Music Education becomes a part of Örebro University College.
1980 Örebro Student Union moves into Östra Mark on Campus Örebro.
1983 The Örebro Studies publication series releases its first title.
1991 The new student union building is inaugurated on Campus Örebro.
1992 A comprehensive teacher education programme is established.
1992 Örebro University College is given degree-awarding powers for the Degree of Master in 11 subjects.
1993 The professorship programme is launched through an agreement between Örebro University College and Uppsala University to establish around ten professorships in the social sciences and humanities field. An academic programme for chefs and waiting staff is launched in Grythyttan.
1994 The School of Technology is established on Campus Örebro.
1995 The College of Health Care Science, until then under regional-local government management, is incorporated into the university college organisation.
1996 Örebro University College is granted the right to establish professorships in 10 subjects. The current university library is inaugurated on Örebro Campus.
1997 Örebro University College is granted permanent research resources.
1999 Örebro University is established and inaugurated on 6 February. The university and Örebro Student Union institute the Excellent Teaching Award.
2000 The university awards their first doctoral degrees and confers their first honorary doctorates. The Cookbook Museum at the Nordic House of Culinary Art (Måltidens Hus) opens, showcasing the Wretman collection and the world’s oldest cookbook. Örebro Regional Hospital becomes Örebro University Hospital.
2002 The Programme in Professional Psychology is launched.
2004 The School of Music moves from Örebro city to new premises on Campus Örebro.
2005 The Law Programme is launched.
2008 Bilbergska huset with research laboratories for the natural sciences is inaugurated on Örebro Campus.
2010 Örebro University is given degree-awarding powers in medicine. The Man-Technology-Environment (MTM) research centre becomes one of the UN’s reference laboratories.
2011 The university forms a holding company and establishes an innovation office together with Mid Sweden University, Karlstad University and Linnaeus University.
2013 Centre for Academic Development is established.
2014 Örebro University Medical Campus, Campus USÖ, is inaugurated.
2015 Örebro University is given degree-awarding powers for the Degree of Master of Science in Engineering.
2016 Novahuset, housing the School of Business, is inaugurated. The university is given responsibility for organising Örebro’s annual Walpurgis Night celebrations by Örebro Castle.
2017 The university launches the idea development programme Social Impact Lab (SoIL) designed to support the development of social innovations.
2018 Örebro University is first in the country to appoint senior lecturers specialising in higher education pedagogy. The Robot Lab is inaugurated on Campus Örebro.
2019 The university celebrates its 20-year anniversary and opens the permanent exhibition Wall of Inspiration, paying tribute to its alumni.
2022 Learning Lab is established as a pedagogical test environment in collaboration with the property management company Akademiska hus.
2023 Örebro University establishes an award for outstanding research communication in collaboration with the Hamrin Foundation.
2024 Örebro University becomes a member of a new European University: NEOLAiA. Campus Total Defence is launched in collaboration with the Swedish Defence University and Luleå University of Technology.
