Training programme for research leaders

Massor med röda äpplen.

The Training programme for research leaders is intended for those who hold a collegial leadership role in research. You may, for example, lead a research group and drive its work forward, with or without holding a formal appointment, serve as a head of subject with a mandate to safeguard and develop a field of research, or hold another form of collegial leadership role within the University's research activities.

Please note! The course Training programme for research leaders is not included in the 10 weeks of university teaching courses required for employment as lecturer or above at Örebro University.

The course provides knowledge, practical tools and opportunities for reflection on the particular conditions and challenges of research leadership. It also offers participants the opportunity to examine their own leadership practice and to discuss experiences and challenges with colleagues in comparable roles.

Through seminars and peer learning, the course addresses themes such as research culture, sustainable leadership, research ethics, conflict management, and the development of strong and sustainable research environments.

Training programme for research leaders

Course in research leadership, 3 weeks
(Utbildning för forskningsledare)

1. GENERAL INFORMATION

The course is aimed at researchers who lead research and support other researchers in a collegial context. It is not intended for those in formal management positions.

2. ABOUT THE COURSE

The Training programme for research leaders corresponds to 120 working hours, or three weeks of full-time study. The course syllabus was approved by Johan Åkerman on 12 October 2026.

2.1 Course objectives

After completing the course, participants should be able to

  • reflect on and develop their own research leadership in a collegial context,
  • analyse and promote a positive research culture characterised by high scientific quality, research ethics, equality and inclusion,
  • address and evaluate leadership challenges with reference to relevant theories and perspectives,
  • develop strategies for building and strengthening thriving research environments.

2.2 Course content

The course content is structured around four dimensions of research leadership: research culture, field of research, strategy, and the group and the individual. Seminars led by senior researchers and experts address generic aspects of research leadership while also highlighting differences between research fields and disciplinary logics. Throughout the course, participants are given opportunities to reflect on the characteristics of their own field of research and on their particular context. Such reflection is essential to engaging meaningfully with the content of the course.

2.3 Teaching modes

The course uses presentations, seminars, independent reading and reflection assignments. Learning activities are conducted individually, in full-group sessions and in smaller discussion or working groups. Course materials and information are published throughout the course on Örebro University’s learning platform.

2.4 Attendance requirements

As the collegial exchange of experiences and knowledge is an important element of the course, a high level of attendance is required. In case of absence, participants must contact the course coordinator well in advance to discuss how the learning activity can be completed or the course content covered in another way. Participants who are unable to attend the two-day residential course session, or whose overall attendance falls below 70 per cent, will normally be required to retake the course unless otherwise agreed.

2.5 Assessment

The course is assessed through participation in the residential course session, participation in reflective learning groups, and completion of the final reflection assignment.

2.6 Reading list

Course literature will be made available throughout the course.

2.7 Course certificate

A course certificate will be issued on completion of the course.

3. PRIOR ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for this course, participants must hold a doctoral degree and have some form of collegial leadership role in research.
