About Ida Schoultz

Ida Schoultz defended her thesis entitled "Bacterial-epihelial interactions in Crohn's disease" in 2009 at Linköping University, after completing a post-doctoral period at the University of Calgary (2010-2012), Ida joined Örebro University to continue her research. Since 2019 Ida is an Associate Professor at the Department of Medical Sciences where she leads the research group "The Ageing Gut - in health and inflammation". Ida's project aims to map the mechanisms behind age-associated gastrointestinal problems but also understand the reasons behind why inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is now increasing among older adults. By understanding the mechanisms behind gastrointestinal disorders and IBD in the elderly, important puzzle pieces are added to the understanding of how the gastrointestinal tract ages in a healthy state and how gut health can be promoted among older adults. Ida has an expertise in experimental methods for studying the gastrointestinal barrier, particularly the Ussing chamber technology, which makes it possible to study how different substances but also bacteria pass over the intestinal mucosa and affect the barrier function of the intestine.

At the department is head of one of the departments three units and also participate in education as well as educational aspects of the Medical Programme. Ida regularly give popular scientific lectures and was invited as a geust to the TV show "Malou efter tio" to talk about how the immune system changes with age. At the following link you can listen to a short lecture by Ida where she talks about her research and how the gut changes with age.
