Research subject

Geriatrics is focused on preventing, diagnosing, treating, nursing and rehabilitating diseases in old age. A central concept is frailty which means reduced reserves in the organs of the body due to ageing, usually in combination with disease. We want our research to contribute to high-quality personalized care for elderly people with frailty, multiple diagnoses, polypharmacy and increasing care needs.

Ongoing research focuses on the following topics:

  • Frailty and impact of cognitive and emotional impairments
  • Orthogeriatric care including hip fractures and leg amputations
  • Malnutrition, sarcopenia and refeeding syndome
  • Geriatric neurology; Stroke in the oldest old
  • Pharmacology
  • The aging gut
  • Cognitive medicine including psychiatric, neurological and, cognitive symtoms and biomarker analyses in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid
  • Cerebral hemodynamics in mild cognitive impairment and dementia
  • Behavioural and psychiatric symptoms in dementia ( BPSD) and biomarkers
  • Old Age Psychiatry and cognitive therapy
  • Physical activity and nutrition as treatment for depression/anxiety (RCT)
  • Covid 19 long-term effects in the geriatric population and in collaboration with the primary care (RCT)
