About Magnus Engwall

Magnus Engwall is Professor of Environmental Toxicology at Örebro University and Director of the Man-Technology-Environment (MTM) Research Centre. His work focuses on receptor-mediated effects of organic pollutants, with emphasis on mechanism-specific bioassays, mixture toxicology, and complex environmental matrices. He leads and contributes to numerous projects, including CPTox (Cell Painting in toxicology), Effect-based strategies for hazardous indoor chemicals, Chemical safe circularity of plastics, Identifiera (toxicity-driving PACs), Mixture-Risk, NanoSafety2, NANOSIGN, PLASTIC-Risk, PARC, and One-Blue. Earlier projects include APPLICERA (site-specific soil risk assessment), studies of perfluorochemical toxicity in avian development, Baltic Sea expeditions, and bioanalytical screening of persistent organic pollutants in wildlife. He has an extensive publication record in high-impact journals on microplastics, PFAS, PACs, and related pollutants. Recent work includes “Deciphering phenotypic, inflammatory, and endocrine disrupting impacts of e-waste plastic-associated chemicals” (Environmental Research, 2025). Professor Engwall promotes interdisciplinary collaboration across biology, chemistry, environment, and technology, linking fundamental toxicology with applied risk assessment. His expertise spans high-content imaging (Cell Painting), effect-directed analysis, reporter gene assays, and receptor activation profiling, all applied to identify hazards in complex mixtures. His research underpins improved risk assessment of contaminated soils, sediments, aquatic systems, recycled plastics, and emerging indoor chemical and particle threats, with the aim of informing policy and remediation strategies grounded in mechanistic understanding.
