WASP Researcher of the Month - Stephanie Lowry

Stephanie Lowry presenting her research

Stephanie Lowry used a Mars image produced by NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS.

Researcher of the Month is Stephanie Lowry, Assistant Professor in Computer Science. Stephanie Lowry recently gave her Docent Lecture, and we asked her to answer a few questions, to get to know her and her research.

Describe your research in one sentence.

I am interested in robots that can perceive, learn about, and understand the natural world so they can explore and navigate in all kinds of different environments.

What do you hope your research will lead to?

My inspiration is robot orienteering. The sport of orienteering involves navigating through challenging natural environments using only a compass and a map, and my research aims at developing a robot that could do this too.

If you could collaborate with anyone in the worlds, who would it be and why?

My goal is to share knowledge and inspiration with as many people as possible. The most exciting thing about my job is how many different people I get to meet and learn from. In my department there are people from 30 different countries and I feel so privileged to learn from so many rich and diverse perspectives.

What do you do when you’re not researching?

I love to be in nature, and enjoy walking, running, and cycling.

Thank you Stephanie!
