About the speaker
Dr. Lai is a postdoctoral researcher funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship at the Toxicological Centre of the University of Antwerp in Belgium. She completed her PhD degree in Environmental Forensic Chemistry in May 2014 from the University of Queensland, National Research Centre for Environmental Toxicology, in Australia. Her major research themes include (a) developing analytical methods for measuring residues of illicit drugs, opioids and pharmaceuticals in wastewater and human urine and hair samples; (b) evaluating temporal and spatial patterns of population substance use (e.g., illicit drugs, alcohol and tobacco) via wastewater-based epidemiology; (c) measuring population exposure to carcinogens, particularly from tobacco use, for assessing the associated population health; (d) assessing in vitro human metabolites from exposure to chemicals and substances; and (e) hair analysis for retrospective biomonitoring of substance use. She has been also involved in different projects as a co-chief investigator to particularly work on analytical method developments for multichemical identification and measurement in environmental and human matrices.
