MicroSens - Improving taste perception by altering oral microbiota
Thank you for your interest in our study! We are looking for healthy people between 18 and 45 years old, that do not have any problems with taste.
Next to the tastebuds on the tongue, there are microorganisms (tongue microbiota) that transform incoming food into substances that may be part of the taste experience. In this project, we propose that changing oral microbiota could be a possible way to improve our taste.
The study aims to determine if changing the oral microbiota will affect our taste. We will use a mouthwash and toothbrushing routine for 2 weeks, which is known to alter taste and test for microbes on the tongue and changes in taste.
The study will involve an information and screening session, a training session and four visits (two before and two after the intervention) to take samples from the tongue and evaluate your taste sensitivity. The visits will be at Örebro University and all materials will be provided. Financial compensation will be paid for your discomfort and inconvenience (SEK 1500, taxable).
You should not:
- have any problems with taste or smell
- be diagnosed with food allergy or intolerance
- have habits that could alter taste (e.g. smoking during last 3 months)
- have any medical condition that could alter taste (e.g. diabetes)
- be pregnant or breastfeeding
