AI, Film and Thinking, 7.5 Credits

In this course we explore critical and philosophical perspectives on AI along with ideas about thinking in and through film. Main questions covered: How can AI affect our conceptions of what it means to be human? And our conceptions of things like “intelligence”, “thinking”, and “consciousness”? How do narratives in fiction films as well as in marketing by the tech industry, shape our ideas of “AI”? What do really existing AI technologies actually do? Do they “think” at all, and if so in which senses? How might AI function as a tool to develop and expand human thought itself (rather than only complement, replace, or inhibit human thought)? Can current AI also be evaluated through theories on film as means to advance human thought? And with theories on film technology as “machinic intelligence”?
