More information about studying with disabilities

To be granted support from Funka, you need a doctor's assessment as grounds for the disability and its durability. Below is a list with examples of disabilities for which you can be granted support. The following text describes what kind of support you can get here at Örebro University.

Examples of disabilities for which you can be granted support

  • dyslexia
  • dyscalculia
  • neuropsychiatric conditions
  • mental health issues
  • mobility impairment
  • visual impairment
  • hearing loss
  • long term medical conditions

What support can you get?

What kind of support you need depends on what obstacle you experience in the educational setting. What course you are taking also matters when we decide on your support and recommendations. Below a list of special educational support. One or some of those can be offered to you.

  • Adjustments in connection with written examinations can be, for example, extended time, test-taking in smaller groups or using a computer.
  • Note taking support means that a fellow student takes notes at lectures and then gives you a copy of them.
  • Study skills tuition is offered to all students and can provide tip about reading strategies, note taking techniques and how to use apps as support in your study situation.
  • Hearing aids can be borrowed if you have a lecture in a room that does not have an installed loop system.
  • Mentoring support is provided mainly to students with ADHD/ADD/Aspergers. Support is available primarily for students with neuropsychiatric disabilities. A mentor is a fellow-student with good study experience and routines who can help you to plan and develop good study routines.
  • Adaptation of course material is provided to students with visual impairments. Other students may on some occasions need adapted material. Your disability coordinator decides if you are entitled to this.
  • Sign language interpretation in your courses requires good planning. Please contact the disability coordinator as soon as possible.
  • Individual adjusments can be provided due to your obstacles in your educational setting.

Please note that we cannot assist you with transport service, technical equipment, medical assistance or aids and assistance outside the university setting. This support is the responsibility of the Social Welfare System in the municipality of your residence. Please contact the municipality before you apply to the university.

Equal rights

"The goal at Örebro University is that you as a student with disability will be able to pursue and participate in education on equal terms as other students. That requires a professional reception, accessibility and access to individual educational adjustments so that you can feel safe and get the right preconditions to carry out your studies with good results.

We at Örebro University have a long experience with students with disabilities. At the Funka unit (Student Services) there are coordinators to help students with disabilities.

The Discrimination Act (2008:567) aims to combat discrimination and promote equal rights and opportunities regardless of gender, gender identity or expression, ethnicity, religion or belief, disability, sexual orientation or age."
