Entrepreneurs in Residence

Entrepreneurs in Residence.

We test research ideas in real-world cases – together with entrepreneurs and students.

Entrepreneurs in Residence (EIR) develops research-based ideas towards practical application. We bring together researchers, entrepreneurs and students in a structured phase where ideas are tested.

The aim is to increase the real-world impact of research and to more quickly identify which ideas have the potential to move forward to pilot projects, incubation or further development.

Do you have a research idea that could create value beyond academia?

Through EIR, you don’t have to drive the development yourself – a team works on it together with you. You receive a concrete basis for your next step – not just an idea.

The work is led by the Innovation Office and Inkubera, who ensure structure and quality throughout the programme.

You contribute your knowledge and direction. A team consisting of an entrepreneur and students will work on:

  • Exploring needs and use
  • Identifying potential applications
  • Developing a basis for next steps

You will receive:

  • An initial understanding of the idea’s potential
  • Contact with external stakeholders
  • A basis for pilot, incubation or further research

After the programme, you decide if and how you want to move forward. You are not committed to the team or any next step.

Do you want to work with real innovation cases and gain experience of how ideas are developed in early stages?

As a student in EIR, you work in a team around a real research-based idea. You collaborate closely with both researchers and entrepreneurs.

The work takes place within a structured trainee-style programme led by the Innovation Office and Inkubera.

You may, for example:

  • Conduct interviews with users
  • Map needs and market opportunities
  • Test assumptions and ideas
  • Contribute to pitching and presentation of the case

You will gain:

  • Hands-on experience of innovation and research utilisation
  • Contact with researchers and external stakeholders
  • A concrete merit for your future career
  • Compensation for your work as part of the structured trainee-style programme

How it works

EIR works with a limited number of selected cases.

Each case is matched with an entrepreneur experienced in developing ideas towards market application and goes through a structured process over 3–6 months.

The outcome is a clear basis for decision-making: pilot, incubation or further development.

Identification of idea
Research-based ideas are selected in collaboration between the Innovation Office and Inkubera.

Team matching
An entrepreneur (EIR) and a student team are matched with the case.

Exploratory phase (3–6 months)
The team explores needs, use and potential applications.

Decision on next steps
The case proceeds to one of the following:

  • Pilot project
  • Incubation
  • Further research
  • Closure

What are the outcomes?

EIR focuses on creating clear and actionable results in the early stages.

Each case is expected to lead to:

  • Validated needs
  • Concrete insights
  • Dialogue with potential users or partners
  • A basis for decision-making on next steps

Not every idea becomes a company – but every case generates knowledge and clearer direction.

Part of the university’s innovation support system

EIR is a programme run by Örebro University Holding and represents an early stage in the university’s innovation system, where ideas are tested before moving forward, for example to incubation.

The programme is carried out in collaboration between:

  • The Innovation Office
  • Inkubera
  • Student assignments

Together, we create a link between research, entrepreneurship and real-world application.
