About Karin Hellfeldt

Karin Hellfeldt is an Associate Professor of Criminology at Örebro University and the research director of CAPS – Center for Criminological and Psychosocial Research, a research group in criminology dedicated to producing practically relevant knowledge on norm-breaking and criminal behaviour, as well as psychosocial adjustment and development more broadly.

Her research focuses on crime prevention and issues of safety and security, with a particular emphasis on the living conditions of children and young people. She leads the prospective longitudinal research programme the SOFIA-study, which follows the development of norm-breaking and criminal behaviour over time and examines its relationship with early risk and protective factors.

A central part of her work involves developing and evaluating crime prevention initiatives in collaboration with community stakeholders. She has evaluated the working method Effective Coordination for Safety (EST) and the implementation of Group Violence Intervention (GVI) in Sweden, and has worked extensively with local safety surveys and analyses of perceived insecurity in collaboration with municipalities and police regions. Her research employs both quantitative and qualitative methods and aims to generate knowledge that strengthens policy development and practical crime prevention efforts.

Karin has also contributed to the development of the Criminology Programme at Örebro University and served as Programme Director from 2016 to 2020. She teaches at all levels, primarily in criminological theory and crime prevention, and supervises doctoral students within her areas of expertise.
