Despite massive investments in environmental research and increasing data on the human impact on the environment, measures to address global environmental challenges remain insufficient. Clearly, more scientific knowledge about environmental problems is not enough; we also need knowledge about how society can change. This project explores the conditions and challenges of developing expertise for transformative change regarding three of the most serious global environmental problems: climate change, biodiversity loss, and chemical pollution. The project examines three intergovernmental expert organizations: the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), and the he Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste and Pollution (ISP-CWP). The project also studies international scientific networks that in various ways attempt to influence decision-makers to develop more radical and adequate policies.
