Wire drawing is a key manufacturing process for producing metal wire used in critical applications across sectors such as energy, transport, and national defence. The process depends on specialised inputs, including lubricants and forming tools, which are largely imported through international supply chains. Disruptions to global trade and logistics can therefore rapidly affect industrial production capacity.
The project aims to reduce this vulnerability by mapping supply chains, identifying critical risks, and analysing strategies to strengthen supply resilience. By combining process knowledge with supply chain and industrial resilience analysis, the project will develop practical recommendations, including alternative supplier structures, technical substitution, redundancy, and supply preparedness. The results will strengthen the wire drawing industry’s ability to maintain production during disruptions and contribute to more resilient material supply for critical infrastructure and Sweden’s total defence.
