David Baxter Presents Research at IEEE OES AUV Symposium 2026

Last week, David Baxter, PhD in Computer Science, participated in the IEEE OES AUV Symposium 2026 in Southampton, where he presented his research on autonomous underwater systems.

David presented the paper “Relative Navigation and Dynamic Target Tracking for Autonomous Underwater Proximity Operations,” which has also been published as an open-access article in the IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering as part of the AUV2026 journal track.

The research addresses key challenges in autonomous underwater robotics, including relative navigation and dynamic target tracking during close-proximity operations. Such capabilities are essential for enabling autonomous underwater vehicles to safely and effectively operate alongside other moving platforms in complex environments.

Reflecting on the project, David says:

- This project has been a particularly rewarding part of my PhD and has given me the opportunity to work on some of the problems that first drew me towards autonomous robotics: how robots can understand the motion of other agents, navigate relative to them, and ultimately operate together in challenging environments.
