Gut microbiota research has predominantly been based on analysis of faecal samples or rectal swabs due to their easy sampling. Both these methods consider samples from the distal part of the gastrointestinal passage for analysis. How these samples reflect the gut microbiota composition and diversity in more proximal parts is poorly described.
