Research Subject

The research performed within the project has shown that almost 65% of elderly people living in their own homes experience one or several GI symptoms. Recently, we were able to show that moderate problems with constipation and diarrhea were associated with an altered gut barrier and increased psychological distress. Currently the gut microbiota composition is being surveyed in older people experiencing moderate GI symptoms in relation to intestinal permeability. These analyses are performed in collaboration with Prof. Dirk Repsilber's research group Functional Bioinformatics.
