Disputerade i Medicinsk Mikrobiologi 2009 vid Linköpings Universitet och efter disputationen påbörjade han en forskningsanställning på Sektionen för Antibiotika vid Statens Veterinärmedicinska Anstalt (SVA), Uppsala som varade från 2009 till 2021. Under 2019-2020 var han också Adjungerad Universitetslektor i medicinsk mikrobiologi, inriktning antibiotikaforskning ur ett ”One-Health”-perspektiv vid Linköping Universitet, där han i maj 2020 blev antagen som Docent inom Mikrobiologi. Från 2021 till 2022 jobbade han vid Folkhälsomyndigheten som Utredare inom Antibiotikaresistens och Zoonoser.

Sedan februari 2023 är han anställd som Universitetslektor inom molekylär mikrobiologi och som Docent vid Institutionen för hälsovetenskaper.

Forskning

Stefans forskning fokuserar på förekomst och spridning av antibiotikaresistenta bakterier och mobila genetiska element (exempelvis plasmider) som bär på gener som kodar för antibiotikaresistens. Framför allt fokuserar hans forskning på förekomst hos och spridning av antibiotikaresistens till, från och mellan djur och den yttre miljön med ett specifikt intresse för vilda djur och avloppsreningsverk, samt hur dessa spelar en roll för utveckling av antibiotikaresistens och förekomst hos människor och i vårdrelaterade miljöer.

Han intresserar sig främst för Methicillin-resistanta Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Methicillin-resistanta Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP), samt Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella spp. och Escherichia spp. som utvecklat resistens på cefalosporiner med utökat spektrum (3e och 4e generations cefalosporiner) och karbapenemer framförallt de som producerar Extended Spectrum Betalactamase (ESBL) (internationellt benämnt pAmpC , ESBL och karbapenemaser), samt Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella spp. och Escherichia spp. som utvecklat colistinresistens.

Undervisning

Undervisar framför allt på kurser inom Biomedicinska analytikerprogrammet, Sjuksköterskeprogrammet och Röntgensjuksköterskeprogrammet.
