Senior lecturers in Statistics
Ref no: ORU 2.1.1-04938/2025
We are looking for one or two senior lecturers in Statistics for a permanent position at the Business School at Örebro University.
Subject area
The subject area for this position is Statistics.
Background
Örebro University School of Business is a place where education and research meet in the four subjects Business Administration, Economics, Informatics, and Statistics. We are accredited by AACSB, the largest accreditation body and network for business schools globally – an achievement accomplished only by five per cent of the world’s 16,000 business schools.
Örebro University School of Business is host to the Department of Statistics at Örebro University and offers courses and study programmes in statistics at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels. In addition to the Bachelor’s Programme in Statistics, courses are offered in, among others, the Programme for Business and Economics. At the master’s level, a two-year study programme in statistics is offered which has been awarded the ‘European Master in Official Statistics’ (EMOS) label by Eurostat. The department also offers courses in the Master’s Programme in Economics and Econometrics, and the Master’s Programme in Finance.
Within the department, research is mainly conducted with a focus on Bayesian statistics with applications in econometrics and time series analysis, as well as survey methodology and statistics production. Research is undertaken with close links to applied fields, including collaborations with Statistics Sweden and the Department of Economics at the university.
Duties and responsibilities
As a senior lecturer you are spending your working hours on teaching at all levels, research, and associated public engagement activities. In addition to education, research and collaboration, duties and responsibilities include development work, administration and continuing professional development. Moreover, teaching encompasses supervision, examination, course development, planning and evaluation.
Teaching takes place at the undergraduate level in the Bachelor’s Programme in Statistics and, and at the advanced level in the Master's Programme in Statistics. Teaching may also take place in courses offered within other programmes at the university. The duties of the senior lecturer include teaching at all levels. The language of instruction is Swedish at the undergraduate level and English at the advanced level. The duties may also include pedagogical management responsibilities such as course and program coordination.
Qualifications
Those qualified for appointment as a senior lecturer are applicants who have demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a doctoral degree in a subject matter relevant for the position, or have the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the position and the duties that it will involve.
A general eligibility criterion for teaching staff at Örebro University is that they have completed courses on teaching and learning in higher education corresponding to 10 weeks. Knowledge and skills equivalent to such courses may also be assessed to establish whether these provide eligibility. A teacher who at the time of appointment lacks such training or the equivalent competence, must complete the required courses no later than within two years of taking up the position.
Assessment criteria
When appointing teaching staff, both the applicant’s research expertise and their teaching expertise will be assessed, and they are to be given equal attention. The assessment is also to consider the applicant’s qualifications and experience from collaboration with the wider community, of which the university is a part, as well as national and international experience and mobility. In addition, the applicant’s suitability for the position will be assessed.
Research expertise
Research expertise is to be demonstrated through independent research contributions and continued scientific publishing following the award of the doctoral degree. Importance shall also be attached to the candidate’s establishment in the research community as well as to their experience of planning, administering, and leading their own research.
In terms of research focus, we are looking for a person who can be expected to contribute to the research environment within the subject's research profiles. In addition to volume and quality of own research production, demonstrated ability to apply for and receive research grants is an advantage.
Teaching expertise
When defining teaching expertise at Örebro University, three categories are used: teaching approach, how the teaching approach is put into practice, and professional development as a teacher. The applicant’s teaching qualifications are therefore to be documented accordingly and in compliance with Örebro University’s template for teaching portfolios, relating clearly to the values set out in Örebro University’s educational philosophy.
Teaching expertise is to be demonstrated through varying degrees of contributions within teaching, such as planning, execution, evaluation and follow up of teaching activities, as well as supervision and examination. The applicant must be able to account for their teaching outlook and approach and have the ability to reflect on their own pedagogical development as well as on the teacher’s role. The applicant is also expected to have contributed to educational development.
Collaboration and public engagement skills
The ability to interact with the surrounding society is an important part of a university teacher’s role and it requires a good understanding of various societal processes and the impact of university activities on these. Assessment of collaboration and public engagement skills looks at three aspects: the ability to communicate, the ability to collaborate with the surrounding society, and the ability to facilitate utilisation of the university’s research.
Leadership skills
In assessing leadership and administrative skills, particular consideration should be given to leadership qualifications within education and research, such as contributions to development work. Depending on the specialisation and duties of the appointment, qualifications from operations outside of the higher education sector may be considered.
We see it as positive if the applicant has experience, or interest, in pedagogical or administrative management responsibilities.
Suitability
Suitability refers to the applicant having the personal qualities required to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities at hand, to cooperate with other members of staff, and to contribute to the development of the operations in question. We value cooperation skills and regular attendance at the workplace highly.
Other assessment criteria
A wide experience to teach courses in statistics, in particular in the focus areas of the unit, such as official statistics and survey methodology, and Bayesian statistics and econometrics, is particularly advantageous.
The position requires good communication skills in English and basic communication skills in Swedish.
