Safe Sludge logotype
Society faces a growing challenge in managing sewage sludge in a safe and sustainable manner. Sludge contains both phosphorus, which is a critical raw material for food production, and a complex mixture of potentially harmful substances. To enable circular use, solutions are needed that prevent the spread of hazardous substances into the environment and the food system.

The SAFE SLUDGE project combines advanced chemical analysis with effect-based methods to identify and assess both known and unknown contaminants. By studying the entire chain, from sources in the sewage system to the treatment of sludge via pyrolysis and the subsequent use of biochar, the project aims to reduce the spread of hazardous substances and contribute to a toxin-free sludge cycle. The project is being carried out in close collaboration between research, industry and public authorities.
