Om Joao Barbosa

João Marcos Barbosa is a postdoctoral researcher in the Metabolomics and Exposomics group at the Man-Technology-Environment Research Centre, Örebro University, Sweden. His research sits at the intersection of analytical chemistry, metabolomics, exposomics, and environmental health, using high-resolution mass spectrometry and multi-omics approaches to elucidate how environmental pollutants reshape metabolism and contribute to metabolic disease. João Marcos earned his PhD (2024) in Chemistry from the Federal University of Goiás, Brazil, and completed Fulbright-supported doctoral research at the University of Washington, USA, where he expanded his experience with untargeted and targeted MS-based omics. His earlier work also explored volatilomics for non-invasive cancer detection; he now focuses on environmental pollutant-driven mitochondrial dysfunction, multi-omics method development, and data-processing pipelines for large-scale exposomics. His long-term research goal is to translate mechanistic omics signatures into accessible tools for environmental and clinical monitoring.
