The POP project (PeriOperative Pathway for older adults) aims to improve care for older individuals undergoing surgery, from preparation to recovery. In Sweden, approximately 1.5 million people undergo surgery each year, nearly half of whom are aged 65 or older. Several factors influence the care pathway, including preoperative anxiety, health literacy, and frailty. Many older adults have limited ability to understand and use health information, and a significant proportion live with frailty, which may affect recovery. As many procedures are performed as day surgery, patients are expected to manage recovery at home. The POP project explores how care can be developed to be more person-centered, safer, and better adapted to the needs of older adults.
