The research centre AASS arranges a seminar with Kam K. Leang, University of Utah Robotics Center, USA.
Aerial robotic systems, such as small low-cost unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), have attracted significant attention for applications in agriculture, delivery services, telecommunications, emergency response, and environmental monitoring. But despite recent advances in the design and development of such systems, intelligent motion control and autonomous operation, especially in cluttered and complex environments, remains a challenge. Additionally, many applications require vehicles to carry specialized payloads and sensor packages for monitoring, data gathering, and target localization and estimation. This talk will focus on recent advances from our lab in the area of motion planning and control, automatic collision avoidance, and probabilistic-based methods for sensing and estimation with the goal of creating advanced next-generation UAV teams for search and rescue, autonomous environmental monitoring, and other related applications.
Kam K. Leang received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Utah in December 1997 and 1999, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Washington in December 2004. He is a Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Utah, where he joined the department in July 2014. He is a core member of the University of Utah Robotics Center. His research covers three main areas: (1) design and control of high-speed nanopositioning systems, (2) control and manufacturing of electroactive polymer actuators for soft robotics, and (3) design, motion planning, and control of mobile robotic systems with application in environmental monitoring.
