Om Elisabeth Westerdahl

Bakgrund

Elisabeth Westerdahl är leg sjukgymnast och docent i medicinsk vetenskap med inriktning kirurgi vid Örebro universitet, disputerad i medicinsk vetenskap med inriktning klinisk fysiologi, Uppsala universitet år 2004. Elisabeth Westerdahl har specialistkompetens i sjukgymnastik inom lungmedicin utfärdat av Fysioterapiförbundet 1997.

Forskningsinriktning, samverkan

Forskningsarbetet rör lungfunktion och effekter av fysioterapi efter kirurgi. Elisabeths forskning fokuserar främst på andningsträning, mobilisering och fysisk aktivitet i samband med thoraxkirurgiska ingrepp. Hon studerar även andningsvårdande behandling till patientgrupper med kroniskt obstruktiv lungfunktionsnedsättning och hennes intressen inkluderar fysiologiska effekter av olika former av andningsträning. Huvudmålet med forskningen är att utvärdera fysioterapeutiska metoder främst i samband med hjärtkirurgi och lungcancerkirurgi för att optimera postoperativ återhämtning. Elisabeth har i ett antal studier (se publikationer) visat på effekter av fysioterapeutiska insatser för olika patientgrupper med nedsatt andningsfunktion.

Externa samarbeten

Nationellt samarbetar Elisabeth med forskare vid Örebro universitet, Uppsala universitet, Göteborgs universitet, Karolinska institutet, Linköpings universitet och Karlstad universitet. Internationellt bedriver hon forskning i samarbete med en forskargrupp vid Aalborgs universitetssjukhus, Danmark och Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.

Elisabeth har varit projektansvarig för ett internationellt och tvärprofessionellt forskningsprogram om fysioterapeutisk behandling i samband med lungcancerkirurgi finansierat av Cancerfonden 2015-2019. Hon har arbetat med nationella riktlinjer för andningsvårdande behandling inom sjukgymnastik för patienter som genomgår buk- och thoraxkirurgi samt levnadsvanor i samband med hjärtkirurgi på uppdrag av Fysioterapiförbundet och Socialstyrelsen. Elisabeth Westerdahl har handlett tre doktorander som har examinerats 2013 (Uppsala universitet), 2015 och 2019 (Örebro universitet). Handledning för ytterligare två doktorander pågår vid Örebro universitet. F.n. och på uppdrag har Elisabeth undervisat i masterprogrammet i medicin vid Örebro universitet och har haft basgruppshandledning på termin 3 läkarprogrammet 2012-2018.
