Msc. Project (30HP): Assessing the impact of expectation violations on human-robot collaboration

Humans form expectations from robot’s capabilities and behaviour based on many factors, including media, previous exposure, and past and current interaction. When these expectations are not met, the potential for collaboration between human and robots is impacted negatively. This can happen for social expectations, i.e. what we expect the robot to be able to do socially (talking english, recognizing emotions, etc), and functional expectations, i.e. what we expect the robot to be able to do functionally (e.g. opening a door, carrying a box, etc). It is still unclear however how social expectations violation impact functional expectations, and the other way round.

The project

The goal of this thesis project is to evaluate how social and functional expectations violations influence each others. The student will be expected to implement an experimental setup in a real robot where social expectations and functional expectations are violated.

With the help of the supervisor, the student will formulate the appropriate research questions and hypotheses, design the experimental study, complete the experiments, and analyze the results using the proper statistical analysis techniques.

Student profile
