Abstract
The Barnett effect is the magnetization induced by mechanical rotation of an uncharged body while the Einstein-de Haas effect is its reciprocal: rotation induced by magnetization. I give an historical overview of these effects, including a discussion of the recent observation of the nuclear Barnett effect [1], and present a simple derivation of the Barnett effect based on the conservation of energy and angular momentum. Finally, I discuss the physical origin of the magnetoelastic coupling in magnetic insulators and its effect on the lifetime of magnetic excitations [2].
