Löfstrand arbetade som forskare i Datorstödd maskinkonstruktion vid Luleå tekniska universitet från disputationen 2007 till juli 2013. Därefter arbetade Löfstrand två år vid Uppsala Universitet, Uppsala Databaslaboratorium och slutligen ett år vid Umeå Universitets institution för Datavetenskap i forskningsgruppen Logic and Applications, innan han rekryterades till Örebro universitet.

Forskning

Magnus Löfstrands forskning genomförs i industriella samarbeten varför industribehoven, aktiviteter i utvecklingsprocessen och i försäljningsprocessen alltid måste hanteras.

Metoder och verktyg som utvecklas i forskningen baseras ofta på maskintekniska och informationstekniska data, och syftar ofta till att öka kunskapen om systemtillgänglighet i maskintekniska tillämpningar. En avsikt är att stödja industrin avseende utveckling av tillgänglighetsbaserade erbjudanden.

Metoder och verktyg som utvecklas kan användas till att utvärdera och jämföra alternativa utvecklingslösningar, utvärdera industriell utvecklingskapacitet och effekter av olika utvecklingsval i termer av tid, kostnad och kvalitet, samt skapa bättre beslutsunderlag snabbare än vad som var möjligt tidigare. Industriklimatet idag präglas av ständigt nya krav inklusive ökade krav på samarbete. Löfstrands forskning berör därför även metoder och verktyg för distribuerat samarbete med främst ingenjörsarbete som tillämpning. 

Undervisning

Löfstrand har under elva år handlett i och koordinerat kursen SIRIUS – Kreativ produktutveckling. I kursen deltog sistaårsstudenter som i olika grupper löste skarpa industriproblem åt olika företag. (Ibland deltog även studenter från Produkt- och produktionsutveckling på Chalmers och från Center for Design Research vid Stanford University.) Projekten täckte alla steg i produktutvecklingsprocessen från behov och idé till färdig produkt i form av fungerande prototyp. 

Löfstrand har undervisat i Teknisk produktutveckling samt assisterat i olika CAD-kurser (Computer Aided Design). Löfstrand har även undervisat i doktorandkurser och har handlett doktorander. Se gärna Löfstrands engelska undervisningssida för mer information.
