Abstract: Much of human knowledge and behaviour is mediated by schemata such as image schemata, communication schemata, or process schemata. Within the spatial domain, we are concerned with schemata that help us orient and act in natural and built-up environments. Concepts that may be interpreted as schemata are, for example, landmarks, paths, nodes, affordances, personal spaces, and activities. For a modeller, schemata provide a rich structure to exploit during programming while at the same time allowing for particulars to be added at run-time. In this talk, I will explore the modelling of schemata in agent-based simulations, using affordance schemata and landmark schemata as examples. Insights from this modelling process helps with understanding human spatial behaviour.
Dr. Sabine Timpf is professor of Geoinformatics at the University of Augsburg since 2008. She leads an active research group focusing on modelling and simulating human spatial behaviour such as pedestrian mobility and usage of green spaces. She has published on human spatial cognition as well as developed formal methods for modelling spatial and spatio-temporal phenomena.
