Om Elisabeth Hultgren-Hörnquist

I performed my Ph.D. studies and defended my thesis in 1994 at University of Gothenburg. My thesis project involved T cell regulation of intestinal immune responses and the action of the mucosal adjuvant cholera toxin on mucosal T lymphocytes. A few months after that I was recruited to Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX for a postdoc covered by grants from the Crohn´s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA), working on the characterization of the, at that time, new mouse model of experimental colitis, deficient in the inhibitory G protein subunit Gi2 (Gi2-/- mice)which spontaneously develop chronic colitis, clinically and pathologically resembling UC. For a long time after this I was the only person keeping a colony of these mice as my boss left academia, and my laboratory has made several major discoveries in this model. With this work I also started a completely new field of research at the Department of Medical Microbiol. & Immunol., Göteborg Univ. I set up my own lab, completely independent from other senior scientists, including buying all the basic equipment. I became Associate Professor in 2001. I was also working as a Research & Development Coordinator at Clinical Immunology and Transfusion Medicine, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg between 2004 and 2007

Since returning from my postdoc in the USA I have recruited 7 Ph.D. students as main supervisor, six of which have finished and one will finish in February 2016. In addition I have been/am co-supervisor for three Ph.D. students in both Gothenburg and Örebro. I also have a technician in the group since 1998. In 2007 I accepted a Full Professorship in Immunology at Örebro University, where I am expanding the clinical angle of my research with studies in IBD and MC patients, while still continuing the mouse studies at Göteborg University. In Örebro I have recruited two postdocs; I. Rangel (part-time – also working with Robert Brummer), an expert on microbiota analysis and bioinformatics responsible for our microbiota studies and D. Bergemalm (part-time – being a M.D. resident within Gastroenterology), a proteomics expert and responsible for our fecal biomarker studies

In Örebro I collaborate with gastroenterologists Profs. C Tysk and R. Brummer and Assoc. Profs. J Bohr N. Nyhlin and J Halfvarson, all with good reputation from clinical research on MC and IBD. I also collaborate with Assoc. Prof. O. Hultgren on intracellular regulation of TLR signalling, and Prof. A Sirsjö on Vitamin A metabolism. In Göteborg I collaborate with Prof. P. Bland, a very experienced mucosal immunologist. At the Univ. of Skövde I collaborate with system biologist Dr. A Jansson who is a specialist in mathematical modeling of T cell biology[27].

I am part of the Swedish Organization for IBD studies (SOIBD), the national organization for research and education in IBD. I was also co-founder and co-director of Forum GIMIICum 2009-2014 (Director Prof. J. Söderholm - a Swedish Research Council-funded translational national research school, with the objective to stimulate life-long careers with combined clinical practice and research within the areas of GI inflammation and infection. I am currently a member of the steering board.

I am part of a COST action (BM0806) on the histamine receptor H4R, where we elucidate the role of the H4R in colitis (

My research have been/is enabled by grants from Medicinska Forskningsrådet (MFR)/Vetenskapsrådet (VR); The Cancerf Foundation; EU 5th Framework Program, The Knowledge Foundation, LUA-ALF Västra Götaland, Swedish Society of Medicine, Astra-Zeneca Research Grant; Junior Individual Grant, Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research; Nyckelfonden, Örebro; Project bound Ph.D. student grants, Medical Faculty, Univ. of Gothenburg, Project bound Ph.D. student grants, Örebro University. I currently have 47 peer-reviewed papers, 8 manuscripts and 5 conference contributions/proceedings/book chapters

I was recruited to the full professorship in Immunology at Örebro University in 2007 partly to help writing the application and setting up the Medical School. Our application, where I was in the core writing group, was approved in 2010 and we started the program in January 2011. Since then I have had several major positions including Director of Basic Sciences, Director of Theme Defence, member of the steering committee, member of the examination board. Before moving to Örebro, I have had substantial experience from teaching at Gothenburg University: I was Director of Studies for undergraduate studies in Immunology at Dept. of Clinical Immunology, Course leader for Immunology for Cell Biology students, Advanced Immunology, and Immunology, the two latter PBL-based courses, Examiner at oral examinations of medical, dental, natural science and biomedical analyst students. Extensive lecturing and seminar activities, as well as curriculum work for undergraduate and graduate medical and science students in Immunology. Supervisor of >15 students for their Bachelor and Master degree projects and Lecturer on graduate courses in Inflammation and Mucosal Immunology.

In Örebro I was also Course leader for the Immunology course for Biomedical students and Biomedical Analyst students, 2008-2009.

I have taken several courses including a Leadership Course, Örebro University 2012-2013 and several Pedagogic courses: “Problem-Based Learning”, Univ. of Maastricht 2010-11, ”Leadership Program - Couching Creativity”, MIVAC (Mucosal Immunobiology and Vaccine Center, Univ. of Gothenburg) 2006-07, ”Scientific supervision” 1998, Univ. of Gothenburg. ”Further Pedagogic training for teachers” Univ of Gothenburg, 1999.

I have been/am a member of MIVAC – Mucosal Immunobiology and Vaccine Center, Univ. of Gothenburg 2004-2010, NUPARC - The Örebro Nutrition and Physical Activity Research Centre for optimal health and functionality through life 2009-present, NGBI - The Nutrition-Gut-Brain Interactions Research Centre, Örebro University 2012-present and EMCG - The European Microscopic Colitis Group 2012-present.

Other commissions of trust include Expert Adviser for positions and promotions three times, and for grants applications to the Broad Medical Research Program (BMRP) twice, Opponent for thesis defence at Maastricht University and Karolinska Institute, Thesis evaluation committee member >20 times, Conferrer of doctor´s degrees, Örebro Univerity 2010, Ad hoc reviewer for a broad range of journals within Gastroenterology and Immunology, Member of Meda IBD Club with elected members only, working with gastroenterology and IBD in Sweden, Treasurer: SWIMM (Swedish society for Immunology) 2006-2008, Board member; Center for Gastroenterological Research (CGF), Göteborg Univ. 2000-05, organizer of a three-day symposium;”Immunological aspects on Inflammatory Bowel Disease”, 1997, and co-organizer of 2 symposia; “European Mucosal Immunology Group Meeting (EMIG)” October 2000 and ”Luminal factors in health and disease” 1998, Course leader of graduate course “Basic Gastroenterology” 2000, Invited speaker at >10 scientific meetings and Invited lecturer at >5 institutions in Sweden and abroad, and Oral presentation at >15 international immunology meetings, and “Evolution and Innovation in Problem-based Learning, England 2011.
