Introduction to Cluster Analysis

A very basic and practical introduction to cluster analysis, with examples relevant to medical/clinical research.

• What cluster analysis is and when it can be useful.
• An introduction to how observations are grouped based on similarity, covering common clustering methods such as hierarchical clustering and k-means.
• How to interpret the resulting clusters and how to think about the appropriate number of clusters, and important limitations and common pitfalls.
• A basic introduction in PCA (principal component analysis), its use with correlated variables, and how to interpret results and visualizations.
