Joint Seminar with Social Work and Disability Research

Topic: Resilience in Disability Research and Social Work Research in health care and rehabilitation settings. With invited guest Professor Grahame Simpson, guest research fellow at Örebro University.

Dr Grahame Simpson PhD is adjunct Professor at Griffith University, Australia. He also has academic appointments with the Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney, and the University of Wollongong. He leads the severe traumatic brain injury research stream at the John Walsh Centre for Rehabilitation Research, Kolling Institute. He is founding Director of the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Research Group at the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research. He has dual professional qualifications (social worker, registered psychologist).

With 35 years clinical and research experience in the field of disability and rehabilitation, he specialises in clinical, psychometric, intervention and health services research. He has been a PI on eight investigator initiated RCTs. He has an international reputation for addressing positive psycho-social adaption in complex areas of mental health including suicide prevention, sexual adjustment, behavioural dysregulation, vocational rehabilitation and family resilience among people with neurological conditions including traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke and brain cancer.
Prof Simpson receives international and national support for his research with a career total of $18.9 million in grants from government, industry and philanthropic sources. He has a career total 124 publications (2 books, 5 edited volumes, 14 chapters, 103 refereed journal articles; Google Scholar h-index 33, 3454 citations).

Prof Simpson was an Editorial Board member for Australian Social Work (2010-2019); Member (2008-2012) and then Convenor (2013-2017) of the Australian Association of Social Work National Research Committee; Chair, Scientific Committee, 5th International Conference on Practice Research, Melbourne (2022); Member, International Advisory Committee for Practice Research (2020-2023). He is co-founding convenor of the International Network for Social Workers in Acquired Brain Injury, an e-network of 200 social workers from 10 countries.
