Ischaemic heart disease is the leading cause of death and is responsible for 12.2% of all deaths worldwide, with a frequency of 17 million deaths from cardiovascular diseases every year that is caused by the combinatory effects of environmental and genetic risk factors. Atherosclerosis is the most common underlying cause of cardiovascular disease. The recent advancement in the basic science has explored inflammation as a key component involved in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis.

My research study focusses on the role of inflammasome in aggravating the inflammation in human atherosclerosis, since inflammasome has been implicated in atherosclerosis both because of its activation by cholesterol crystals and since its activation generates the pro-inflammatory cytokine, IL-1β. The study also include theassociation of genetic variant in the gene encoding for inflammasome components to the risk of myocardial infarction.
